ACADEMY REVEALS 2024 NICHOLL SCREENWRITING FELLOWS

LOS ANGELES, CA – Four individuals and one writing team have been selected as recipients of the 2024 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting. Each individual and writing team will receive a $35,000 prize and mentorship from an Academy member throughout their fellowship year. They also will participate in a week of virtual seminars, a virtual meet and greet with the Nicholl Fellowships committee, and in-person networking events, including a celebration in Beverly Hills on October 29. The Nicholl Fellowships were established in 1985 through the support of Gee Nicholl in memory of her husband, Don Nicholl.

Gee. All that "eating the dogs, eating the cats" faded fast. Note the 2005 date on this. They knew. "When Strayhorn’s office studied their impact on the state’s economy, it found that undocumented Texans at the time produced about $1.6 billion in state revenues collected from taxes and other sources — exceeding the roughly $1.2 billion in state services, like public education and hospital care, they received.

The study also found that local governments “bore the burden” of $1.4 billion in health care and law enforcement costs that were not compensated by the state.

Since then, there have been a handful of studies that reached similar conclusions.

“Beneath all of the sound and fury, however, is one incontrovertible fact: TEXAS NEEDS THE WORKERS!!” stated a 2016 paper published by the Perryman Group, a Waco-based economic and financial analysis firm. The group’s review estimated that undocumented Texans contributed $11.8 billion to the state — after subtracting the $3.1 billion Texas spent on them for health care, education and other public services."

I’m curious about the whole “Villain exposes a flaw in the status quo but is defeated anyway” trope. I’m not a comics historian, but I wonder if it can be boiled down to not just the Hayes code, but writers more sympathetic to these ideas than they were allowed to admit?

To bring up an obscure example, I think of how Kangaroo from Spider-Man is introduced as an immigrant being harassed by the police for this reason. Aunt May expresses disapproval at the treatment of immigrants, there’s some clear commentary here. But of course Kangaroo becomes a supervillain and Spidey has to defeat him.

It could just be me, but it feels as if this was writers’ way of getting around the code while airing controversial ideas. So even if the villains are still villains, their grievances are given sympathy to plant the idea in readers’ head that maybe this could’ve been prevented had the status quo not had this structural flaw. Obviously liberalism means neither the villain nor hero can address this directly, so it isn’t always just the censors’ problem, but it is interesting.

But of course; A lot of readers didn’t know the backdrop behind these writing decisions. So while they empathized with these villains, it led to them internalizing the concept of a sympathetic villain who goes against the status quo and is wept for… despite still being stopped anyway. And so this trope ended up repeating itself even outside of the original context.

So a lot of people think this is “nuance” when really it was a restriction of the time. I think of how some people online claim the best villains are the ones who arguably have a better point than the hero, but I always found that dumb because why should I root for the hero? Why is that character considered the villain? It works if you’re doing a story where you’re looking through the eyes of the actual villain but most of the time this isn’t the case. I think people are just being edgelords who don’t realize the history.

And as tragic and beloved as these villains are, as much as we resonate with them and how we also feel villainized by society… At some point, you have to admit that times are changing and so is censorship. And while it had value then, gee maybe we should abandon this trope of the downtrodden villain to instead address this social commentary in a more direct and dare I say effective way. Because we gotta grow out of it.

Clayface is queer-coded and as much as you can empathize with him for it, we can’t continue to settle for stories where the queers are villains and only that. We have the opportunity to move past that and I think we should, especially since this trope is obviously a vessel for propaganda in corporate stories like the MCU. We can appreciate how these stories were born of limitations while acknowledging that the limitations are ultimately still a problem, and that the villain who is an oppressed minority who doesn’t get to accomplish anything because they’re evil has been done enough. We still have those original stories to look back on if we need to, I feel.

Elemental markets a romance and people turn up their noses, but the instant they find out there was three (3) concept arts of Star as a generic twink boy they scream about how great romances are and how Disney "hates romance!!!!!" suddenly. reddit front page is a good way to get an idea of the lib mindset because they dominate the daily topics and the framework / conception / worldview of the content featured every day. Whether it is vote harder, everything is fine in ukraine, greed is more detrimental to society than capitalism or global warming, the acceptable overton window is actually quite narrow. It is truly bizare seeing a posts with titles like "Many Gen Z will not be Voting this election, why not?" and all the responses are basically the same: no vote/third party = trump vote, this is the most important election of your life etc., hope they enjoy the camps!.... are these people interested in hearing out the non-voters or are they just enjoying the big masturbatory circle jerk where they make fun of non-voters? They never ask themselves, gee, could there be a reason people choose not to vote that doesn't imply they are mentally handicap or repulican leaning? I think I answered my own question here but the solution is so fucking simple it breaks my brain trying to comprehend the mental gymnastics they get into desparately avoiding the elephant in the room. Two gangs, both alike in dignity…

It is particularly heartbreaking throughout the movie to notice the similarities between the gangs and how close they come to an understanding at multiple points. Now, of course it is the point for them to not be able to see this or else we wouldn’t have a plot but one can still mourn. Particularly I want to talk about the Jets as their primary drivers are a bit subtler/lost to time whereas the Sharks are much more direct. (Both in story and interpretation).

The advantage they have on the Shark’s is barely existent, they’re both on the same low rung on that latter just the Jets are the top of that rung.

I haven’t seen it mentioned how the Jets are first generation kids, they’re also all from immigrant families. Back in the day, and still in some places up north “they’re still racist to other kinds of white people”, hell Bernardo calls Tony a Polack multiple times. Now this is not anywhere close to the same level of racial/ethnic discrimination faced by the Sharks but it is still very existent. The lieutenant tries to form some sort of “racial solidarity” with the Jets multiple times, going far softer on them and trying to be chummy - when it doesn’t work and he sees the gang doesn’t see their issues as racial he makes his true opinion clear with the “you and the immigrant scum you come from” before getting brutally personal about their homelife.

And while being a very catchy song they aren’t entirely joking in Gee, Officer Krupke. It’s cope. They’re victims of a broken system pushed towards gang life, they can joke and say they’re fine and it’s chosen till they’re red in the face but there’s the underlying economic and social factor there. Additionally- they joke because one would rather be hated than pitied. And while being “born here” gives them a marginal leg up… the American working/lower class doesn’t exactly have a great time.

It’s also easy to convince those with very little of a false enemy. Like the sharks coming into the country and “stealing” the little you have away from you… not the actual cause. They end up fighting over the same measly scrap of land instead of the system that placed them both there. (Their fighting is not inherently racially motivated. It’s more over territory as they had before mingled with some less than savory attitudes of the period and what I mentioned above. This is not negating racism just stating it’s not the primary cause.)

As I’m losing my ability to write out this thought I’d like to leave off with another analogy. The Jets are treated like gravel, an inconvenience and a bother but aren’t met with the same destain as dirt. Gravel and dirt are trampled by the same shoes but gravel would rather keep the little bit better treatment than recognize how a like they are with dirt. And dirt sees only how gravel is treated slightly better, not how they are both being stepped on.

I don’t know I just find the nuance fascinating and the level of similarities goes unappreciated.

Quick list of things my parents have been passive-aggressive about or made remarks about in the last week about my life while I've been staying with them:

The idea that I shouldn't ever be wealthy because I "wouldn't know what to spend it on" just because I said I would have no interest in buying a 400 year old $75 million single house if I had that kind of money!

The idea that any business I might want to start in the future would be a waste of time and the most complex thing I could ever aspire to run would be a shop or a cafe, and also that me running a business would be completely worthless unless I was to invent some new product myself

Questioning my national identity a lot (I grew up in my immigrant father's country; my immigrant father has grown to identify more with my mother's national identity and now they both frequently complain that they "never wanted FOREIGN children")

Asking me what I would like to spend money on if I had it and then dismissing that as a waste of money. Ok, so don't bother asking me then if you only want me to give a certain answer...

Calling me vain and essentially saying it's unnatural and disturbing if I would like to take any drugs or even have surgery to keep my appearance as it is because "you should do what your body is programmed to do" (unless of course, it's die from a disease or something). For context, I have a genetic condition and already take drugs every day to maintain my normal body functions so any taboo around drugs or body modification is already long gone with me and saying that is essentially saying that I am already unnatural... gee, thanks

Constantly suggesting things I should do that are "for single people". I'm in a queer relationship and they know it...

Constantly asking why I haven't been abroad to X place or travelled down to X place within the country that is quite a long distance away, and explaining how much I would really like it when they know that I can't travel away from my home city right now anywhere I can't very quickly travel back to because I am on a rolling week waiting list for an operation I have been waiting for for two years at this stage

Gender, soooo much. Taking pictures of me by surprise or when I'm dressed down or from certain angles so I look not how I like to present myself, and then going on and on about how they love THIS picture MUCH MORE than any selfie or picture I take of myself that "don't look like the real you". Sorry if I have massive body dysmorphia and it's only certain photos I can even face looking at…

My voice! This is the most hilarious one. My parents constantly say I should move to my mother's home country "because you have the accent from there". I don't! Strangers immediately identify me as having my father's home country accent. I have been out with my mother and strangers have mentioned it. Out of their earshot she has openly said to me "how could they know you used to live there?!" and acted like it was a weird lucky intuitive guess.

It feels like the message I have had over and over again this holiday is, "we don't like a lot about how you are right now. Change!"

Well at this stage, that feels really mutual, guys. This negativity is really toxic and ultimately it is consuming you more than me. I'm going to go home back to my regular life where I'm happy(er) with myself and where I have plans and you can just stay in your grumpy what if fantasyland.

meet the author !

basic info: hello hello! i’m gaea (gee-ya, hard g), she/her. i’m 19 years old, half greek and kenyan. greek is my mother tongue so my english may be a bit off at times!

when i’m not writing i’m studying early childhood education to be a kindergarten teacher! i love all things pink, butterflies, and i’m a trained singer. in my spare time i also enjoy gaming- stardew valley and the sims 4 are my current favorites!!

right now i am only writing my own ocs, which i will be sharing on this account, mostly for motivation but also to find fellow writers as well!

my main oc, magdalena, lives in our fictional city of venturis, new york with her cat eloise and her husband koa. she owns a flower shop, the garden of life, and possesses the power to control the elements. she is herself is half greek and swahili, and immigrated to venturis at eighteen. she’s due a proper introduction, of course, but i feel its important to let you know who she is in a nutshell, since she is who i write the most!
